Internet of things
Internet of things IoT is the term to describe a network of items connected to the internet. Since the World Wide Web took place in 1990 more and more devices were connecting to the internet every year. It all started with computers but today we can connect to the internet basically anything. By embedding electronics, sensors, software and internet access it is possible to make an IoT device from anything including computers, mobile devices, home appliances, vehicles, planes, rockets and even whole buildings.
Today there are more connected devices to the internet than humans on the planet. Thanks to advancements in technologies, faster network speed and better software the amount of IoT devices exploded. It is estimated that by 2020 the number of connected devices will reach 26 billion. Apart from computers and smartphones, there are smart home devices like digital assistants, IP cameras installed in the home and streaming live video to the owner, smart locks, thermostats. More and more vehicles are connected to the network including personal cars. Businesses also started to take advantage of the IoT revolution by integrating interconnected devices into their daily processes. For example, transportation companies which connected their vehicles to the network can monitor all the activity in real time, make some statistics and calculate the costs. Today cheap materials and availability of platforms like Arduino and Android Things make it easier than ever for companies and hobbyists build their own IoT devices.
There are a few issues though with IoT devices which are not entirely solved yet but the companies involved in this space are working on them. First of all are security concerns. We need to make sure the communication is secure and only the right persons have access to the devices. To solve this we need to implement secure communication protocols and regular security updates. Another issue is the stability of the device in case of unfavorable external conditions like power shortages or limited internet access. In this case, the device should be able to operate or at least not lock its owner like not being able to get out from home. Another issue is privacy. Owners should be able to configure how much access the device has to their personal life.
